Juniata College is a private liberal arts college located in Huntingdon, which is a borough in the US state of Pennsylvania, serving as the county seat of Huntingdon County, with nearly 7000 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2000 census estimate.
The college was established in 1876, tracing its roots back to the Huntingdon Normal School, founded by a young Huntingdon physician, Dr. Andrew B. Brumbaugh, and his two cousins, Henry and John Brumbaugh, and gets its name from the Juniata River - one of the principal tributaries of the Susquehanna River. It was the first college founded by the Church of the Brethren and has been co-ed since that time.
Juniata offers its students a `flexible, individualized curriculum`, leading to Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, its most popular programs being the ones in Biology/Pre-Health, Accounting/Business, Education, Environmental Science, Psychology, Chemistry and Communication.
Juniata's athletic teams are known as the Eagles and they compete in NCAA Division III, in 10 women's and 9 men's varsity sports. Their distinctive colors are old gold and yale blue.
William Phillips - atomic physicist, National Institute of Standards and Technology, jointly awarded Nobel Prize in 1997 for advancing basic knowledge and new techniques to chill atoms to extremely low temperatures, and John Kuriyan - winner of the Lounsbery Award for extraordinary scientific achievement, Howard Hughes Investigator and Chancellor's Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of California Berkeley, are among Juniata College's noteworthy alumni.
